The Green Groupies was born in 2009 in response to one person’s quest for more meaning to his life. After fifteen years in the garment business as VP of Operations, with expertise in sourcing, marketing and sales, Sameer Handa hankered for something deeper. Already actively involved in New York Cares and The Coalition for the Homeless, this altruistic businessman was used to dedicating a significant part of his life to charity. It seemed logical to merge his enthusiasm for helping the less fortunate with his passion and knowledge of the fashion industry.

Looking for something that would be fun, creative, and significant, he founded a “green” apparel company dedicated to producing eco-friendly clothing for babies in 100% organic cotton. He came up with a playful gift idea that he hoped would carry a positive message to consumers. Eco-friendly, high quality, comfortable garments, packaged in reusable “books” providing original, light-hearted poems with playful illustrations for children to enjoy. Looking for a fellow co-conspirator in his vision, he enlisted the help of his friend, Fran Giuffre, a garment center associate with over twenty five years hands on experience in children’s clothing production. Having dabbled in freelance writing for years, she was eager to join forces. The Green Groupies’ movement, to give back to the community and those in need, became their chief priority.
